Discover Unforgettable Holidays in West Sussex
If you’re searching for holidays in West Sussex that combine coast, countryside, and culture, you’ll find it all within easy reach of Oakwood West Holidays. This is a place where mornings begin with birdsong, days unfold across beaches, vineyards, and rolling hills, and evenings end in comfort and calm. Whether you’re craving adventure or relaxation, West Sussex offers the perfect balance—and Oakwood West puts you right at the centre of it.

West Sussex Holidays Mean Coastal Escapes and Waterside Adventures
One of the highlights of any West Sussex stay is the coastline, and few beaches rival the beauty of West Wittering. With its sweeping sandy shores, dune-backed landscape, and views across Chichester Harbour, it’s perfect for everything from relaxed picnics to paddleboarding and family beach days. Arrive early in summer to make the most of its peaceful charm, or visit in the off-season for windswept walks and dramatic skies.
Just inland, the Chichester Canal offers a completely different pace. This historic waterway is ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding, or gentle boat trips. As you glide along, you’ll pass through tranquil countryside, with reeds, wildlife, and small boats creating a quietly picturesque scene. It’s a wonderful way to slow down and experience the landscape from a new perspective. Herons often nest along the way, and kingfishers can be spotted if you're lucky. Children will love feeding the ducks, coots, and moor hens from the wooden rowing boat you can hire for an hour or two.
For those drawn to the sea, Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a fabulous place. Dotted with sailing boats and edged by salt marshes and creeks, it’s perfect for coastal walks, birdwatching, or even chartering a boat for a day on the water. Bosham village is often described as one of the most beautiful in the country, with an independent craft centre, the Anchor Bleu, an old pub with a terraced seating area over the water, and easy waterside strolls, perhaps even crabbing and an ice cream for the little ones.

Exploring the South Downs: Walking, Cycling, and Picnics
To the north of Oakwood West, the South Downs National Park is famous for its rolling green hills, ancient woodlands, and far-reaching views. It’s one of southern England’s most iconic landscapes—and a dream for walkers, cyclists, and anyone looking to reconnect with nature.
Here's a few of our favourite spots:
Kingley Vale Nature Reserve – Famous for its ancient yew forest and sweeping views from the top, this is a magical place for a peaceful walk. In late summer, the surrounding hills come alive with wildflowers.
Goodwood and The Trundle – Offering panoramic views across the Sussex countryside and down to the coast, this area is ideal for walking routes that feel both expansive and accessible.
Harting Down – A favourite for its wide-open spaces and dramatic viewpoints, perfect for a picnic with uninterrupted scenery. You can park right at the top of a hill, so it's great way to experience the South Downs for those less able to walk.
South Downs Way – For keen walkers and cyclists, sections of this long-distance trail provide unforgettable routes through classic chalk downland. There are lots of places you can get onto the South Downs Way, and do a small section of the 100 mile long track. There are some great cafes & pubs along the way too.
Pack a picnic, bring a blanket, and take your time—this is a landscape best enjoyed slowly. You’ll find quiet spots to stop, breathe, and take in the views, whether you’re on a short stroll or a full-day adventure.
Cyclists will love the mix of gentle lanes and more challenging climbs, while families can enjoy shorter, accessible routes with plenty of places to pause along the way.

Culture, Heritage, and Memorable Days Out
West Sussex isn’t just about natural beauty—it’s rich in culture and history too.
In nearby Chichester, you’ll find a charming cathedral city filled with independent shops, cafés, and galleries. The renowned Chichester Festival Theatre draws visitors from across the UK, offering high-quality productions in an intimate setting.
Here's a taste of just a few of the brilliant days out and unique experiences in Sussex:
Weald & Downland Living Museum – A fascinating open-air museum where historic buildings have been carefully preserved and reconstructed. Sarah, from Oakwood West, volunteers at the museum, working in the woodland using traditional skills.
Tangmere Military Aviation Museum – A must-visit for aviation enthusiasts, showcasing the area’s role in wartime history. If you have a really keen aviator in the family, you could even book a flight on a wartime Spitfire from Goodwood!
Fishbourne Roman Palace – Step back in time and explore the largest Roman residence north of the Alps, complete with stunning mosaics.
And of course, no visit would be complete without time at Goodwood Estate. Known for its world-famous events like the Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival, it also offers golf, horse racing, and beautiful grounds to explore year-round.

Vineyards, Food, and Local Flavour
West Sussex has quietly become one of England’s leading wine regions, making vineyard and winery tours a highlight of any stay. Estates such as Ashling Park & Tinwood are nearby vineyards and offer tastings of award-winning English wines, often paired with beautiful countryside views.
Food lovers will find a lot to love here. Discover:
Dog-friendly country pubs serving locally sourced, seasonal menus. Lots of pubs have gardens to enjoy when it's warm and roaring fires to sit by in the cold months.
