Dog Walks Galore!

When you arrive you'll find an OS map in your cottage, marked with some of the best local walks.  There are walks to suit all legs from seaside strolls with coffee and cake to South Downs stomps up and down rolling hills.  Find a selection of our absolute favourite dog walks below.

West Wittering Beach

The Sandy Beach Walk

West Wittering

Take a stroll on the beach at West Wittering, dipping your toes in the waves and playing fetch on the sand flats. You and your dog can have a swim if you want to, it's particularly lovely as the sun sets.   In summer there are some restrictions on which parts of the beach dogs can use.  Book parking the day before for the best rates.  See our blog post for full details.

Walk to the Pub

East & West Ashling

All good walks have the potential to end in the pub! Our two locals are both walkable. Either walk from Oakwood West through our woodland and across fields to the Horse & Groom or to The Richmond Arms both welcome dogs and have great food and a tempting array of drinks.  In winter there are open fires and in summer a garden and courtyard to enjoy.

An Ambitious Walk

The South Downs Way

The South Downs Way is an 100 mile route that runs from Winchester to Eastbourne, there are lots of places you can join it.  Test your mettle on the hills, there are lots of places to join.  It's particularly lovely between Amberley, Cocking and Harting Down, and then onto Buriton or Queen Elizabeth Country Park.  There's lots of info here.

The Nature Reserve

Kingley Vale

A locals favourite, the nature reserve is home to some astonishing ancient yew trees, long fabled to be associated with magic. Walk under their boughs and then climb to the top of Bow Hill for panoramic views of the South Downs. Look down as birds of prey wheel on the breeze. Take a picnic & a bottle of fizz to make the most of this stunning spot. Find out more.

An Easy Coastal Walk

Prinsted Harbour

A Ferry & A Pint

Bosham to Itchenor

The historic village of Bosham is absolutely gorgeous and lovely in itself for a gentle stroll with your pooch. Make a day of it and hop on the seasonal ferry across to Itchenor, for a shore side walk in a pretty sailing village with a pub and cafe.    Check the tide times for Bosham Harbour here.

Dog Walks

Dog Friendly Places to Eat

West Sussex is a very dog friendly area, you'll find that most pubs and cafes happily welcome dogs. You won't have any trouble finding delicious food and a comfy spot for your dog to rest.

Pubs
We haven't yet come across any local pubs that are not dog friendly!  You'll find most pubs have treats on the bar, a bowl of water by the door, and a welcoming smile for your dog.  In the winter there are roaring fires to warm up chilly paws and in the summer balmy gardens to enjoy whilst you have a pint.  Our three closest pubs the Horse & Groom at East Ashling, The Richmond Arms at West Ashling & the Fox and Hounds at Funtington are all very dog friendly.

Cafes
Most of our local cafes are dog friendly too, many have outside space or areas that dogs are welcome inside.  We recommend a breakfast wrap from The Crate cafe in Bosham,  a slice of cake or ice cream in the explosion of floral decorations and a cup of tea from delightfully quirky china at Blooms cafe in Emsworth or try Wellies in West Stoke for a peaceful meal in a converted barn that looks out over Kingley Vale and the South Downs.  The Quarterdeck cafe in Itchenor is another lovely spot, good food overlooking the harbour.

Dog Friendly Attractions Near Chichester

West Sussex is a dog friendly county, and lots of our best attractions are welcoming to dogs.  Here are six of our favourites including fabulous museums & gardens, rowing on Chichester canal, & vineyard tours at nearby Ashling Park, and a day trip to Winchester.

Living History

The Weald and Downland museum is set into hundreds of acres of Sussex countryside, perfect for a day out with your dog.  It's home to a unique collection of historic houses, all reassembled on site to give a fascinating insight into the way of life for ordinary people over the last 1000 years.   It's also home to BBC show The Repair Shop.  Special events days are great, with activities, demonstrations, food festivals and more.

Vineyard Tour & Wine Tasting

The award winning Ashling Park Estate produces some fabulous wines, and they are very welcoming to dogs.  The vineyard tour is really interesting, you'll explore the vines and taste the fruits of the vine in their interactive tasting room. Finish off your day with food and drink in their beautiful restaurant too.

Immersive & Interactive

Explore science, history, & West Sussex heritage at the Amberley museum.  It's a day out for all ages, with intriguing interactive displays, craft demonstrations, a light railway and buses that run up and down the site all day.  It's a lovely site set into the South Downs, if you arrive by train you can get 241 tickets too.  There are great walks from the museum as well and pubs close by too.

Restorative Gardens

The gardens surround a famous art college founded by a surrealist artist, so expect to see some creative joys as you stroll through the beautiful gardens.  Glasshouses, a walled garden, stone bridges and chalk streams, formal planting, an arboretum, and gently tended meadows make this a lovely place to wile away the hours.  Dogs are welcome and there's a lovely cafe too.

Rowing

Chichester canal is a beautiful spot and a wildlife haven, you can walk the banks, but it's best experienced from the water.  Hire a wooden row boat from the visitor centre for a couple of hours and head down the canal.  Conditions are gentle and you're sure to spot lots of birds and butterflies around.  Dogs are welcome in the boat, it's a truly lovely way to spend time.

Historic City

Winchester

Winchester is a beautiful city with a rich history.  Get immersed in it by visiting the ruins of Wolvesey Castle, the 1000 year old Cathedral, or take a trip on a steam train at the Watercress Line.  Celebrate the places loved by Jane Austen, with a free trail through the city.   Visit the quaint shops & bustling street markets for fresh produce, art, or retro finds.  It's a great place for a day out with your dog.
