Autumn is one of the most interesting times to get out into the woods and the countryside of the South Downs. As the weather fluctuates and the plants and animals prepare for winter, there's a flurry of activity everywhere you look. Squirrels move rapidly gathering stores, mushrooms spring up overnight, leaves transform into bright colours before the fall, as their chlorophyll is not replenished, and the valleys echo with the sound of bucks preparing for the rut. If you're staying at Oakwood West Holiday Cottages with children over half term there are lots of fun autumn activities to do, from visiting the fabulous Rogate Pumpkin Patch to encouraging them to get to know nature. Searching for colourful funghi, (all are safe to look at, not all are safe to eat!), making pictures and patterns out of leaves, doing bark rubbings, or just splashing in puddles and climbing trees. We highly recommend bringing wellies and waterproofs over the cooler months. There's no such thing as bad weather when you have the right clothes! Sunsets are particularly atmospheric at this time of year too, it's a lovely time to be out and about.

 A Sight to Behold
Guests looking to the skies last week saw the fabulous sight of 100 house martins whirling about, gathering together as they prepare for their journey south to warmer climes. In the woodland two tawny owls and three young foxes have been released after being rehabilitated by the wonderful team at Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital. Listen & look out for them if you're walking in the woods!
Dinner by the Water
Â
The meandering shore of Chichester Harbour is home to some fine pubs with views out over the sea. The closest, and perhaps the most charming, is The Anchor Bleu, a beautifully quaint pub that you'll find on a stroll past old fisherman's cottages in the picture perfect village of Bosham. Duck under the wooden beams and head out to the decked terrace that sits above the water, lovely for a sunset drink or a plate of classic pub food.
The Crown & Anchor at Dell Quay is a fabulous 16th century pub right on the waters edge. Their delectable menu features some of the best local produce including fresh fish. Sit outside on the terrace when the weather is fine, or head indoors to their dining room (booking recommended) and look out over the harbour through the floor to ceiling windows. They have a modern, inspired drinks menu too. It's a lovely place for a special meal.
The Deck at Emsworth Marina, is tucked away but it's worth a visit. Head to the top floor to enjoy views over the busy marina out to the sea. There's an outside terrace and a restaurant inside for inclement weather. They do a fantastic brunch, and great coffee and cake, plus they're open in the evenings at the weekend.
